Tatu City, Kenya: Airtel Africa has officially broken ground on its Nxtra Data Center, a 44MW sustainable facility set to anchor East Africa’s digital infrastructure.
Located within the Tatu City Special Economic Zone, the Nxtra Data Center is designed to operate on more than 95% renewable energy, positioning it among the greenest data center investments worldwide.
Nxtra Data Center to Deliver 44MW IT Power Capacity
The Nxtra Data Center will provide 44MW of IT power capacity in phases and feature high-density GPU-ready racks, 99.999% uptime, multiple redundant fibre paths, and robust security frameworks.

Built to global standards, the Nxtra Data Center is set to serve enterprises, governments, and communities with scalable, reliable, and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Tatu City Infrastructure Powers East Africa’s Data Centre Growth
Tatu City has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in cutting-edge infrastructure, reinforcing its status as East Africa’s data hub.
Its utilities include a 135MVA substation, a 99.7% uptime distribution network, uninterrupted 24/7 industrial water supply, advanced stormwater systems, 70km of international-standard roads, and over 120km of underground fibre.

Sustainability and Incentives at Tatu City
Tatu City’s renewable energy mix includes one-third solar generation, combined with Kenya’s predominantly green national grid. This creates one of the cleanest and most dependable energy environments for data infrastructure globally.

The Special Economic Zone offers fiscal advantages such as a 10% corporate tax rate for the first 10 years and 15% for the next 10 years (compared to the national standard of 30%).
Additional benefits include VAT zero-rating and exemptions on import duty and stamp duty, attracting multinational corporations to the city.
Currently, more than 25,000 people live, work, and study at Tatu City, which houses over 4,500 homes, 6,000 students, and businesses representing investments exceeding KES 400 billion.
